AM~Erica and the Recruiting Reliance of Hogwarts

So anyway...

This past week was a wild & crazy adventure. It also happened very quickly with a lot information flying!

Three days of this happening in a row, I began to realize that we need to thank J.K. Rowling for something else: promoting excitement in education.

When you read the Harry Potter book series &/or watching the Harry Potter movies, did you sense the magic? Did you sense the excitement of wanting to attend a school like Hogwarts?

It was about being part of a select population who got invited to be a part of the magic; to be a part of the long-standing tradition in that castle. Right? Many of my friends-o-geekery would love to get a glimpse of it, at least.

Yes, yes - Universal Studios, in Florida, has the experience set up. It's a start...but not the classroom setting & learning like in Hogwarts.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Universal Studios

There's many who are fine with the magic of it. Makes sense - Hogwarts is supposed to be a school of wizardry & magic. But there's something deeper happening within those walls beyond a swish & flick of a wand or flying around a quidditch field. What long-standing traditions could you learn & take in? What amazing skill could you learn about in the classroom with the professor, highly skilled in their field of knowledge?

*cue the toy piano/celeste chime of "Hedwig's Theme"*

Our family took in our vacation this week. Though it was hard to call it a relaxing time away, it did involve some family time. However, it surrounded one family member in particular: Teen Boy.

*sigh*

We took this time for college visits. Yes. I said it. College. Visits.

Don't get me wrong, he's been on a couple already, but these visits were to be different...much, much different.

Our son is of the smarticle sort. He's very intellectually driven, for sure, and needs to be somewhere that he can pursue his future interests along with other people he can have the kind of conversations with him that he needs to have.

See, at our house, we can't keep up with his brain. I'm VERY right brained. He is VERY left brained. I love my son. I really do. But I find myself smiling & nodding at him often because I have no idea what he's saying to me. I will say that his wealth of knowledge amazes me. And it gets amplified when he does his ongoing research for debate & extemporaneous speaking. So he's also on top of a lot going on in the world!

With that said, imagine how we felt when he was setting up visits at places like Washington University, University of Chicago, and Northwestern University.

People! He was getting correspondence from these schools asking him to come visit! It wasn't by owl or anything, but it was really exciting! Especially since he was really drawn to a couple of these places.

See? Smarticle kid.

It was interesting, as he looked into these schools, how at least one of them gave a selling point of being like Hogwarts. Interest was piqued.

Hogwarts

As we visited the schools (one each day for three days in a row - it was a lot), I discovered that they all used this particular selling point. In different ways, but oh-so-the-same, all three of these schools relied on Harry Potter & Hogwarts references as selling points in their selling of themselves for recruiting of future student purposes.

Between the architecture of the buildings, the long-standing traditions (have I said that enough yet?), and even classes offered at times, these were the qualities drawn upon for these campuses while showing possible future students of these institutions what it could be like.

OK, no one was flying over head on their Nimbus 2000 stick, and there was no practicing of levitation or transfiguration going on within the courtyards, but there was a sense of them trying to find & show the magic for these upcoming post-secondary students who grew up reading & watching the Harry Potter series. Which is a brilliant move, I might add.

These schools boasted about their Hogwarts architecture, the select student population, and even a class or two. One of the schools even has houses that you are sorted into based on your personality & interests. That particular school also said they did that LONG before anyone knew about Harry Potter.

Washington University - St. Louis
University of Chicago
Northwestern University - Deering Library

When we looked at Teen Girl's current school, they did say they offer a Harry Potter class on an on-again/off-again basis. They are the Griffons (GO GRIFFS!), and their arts building is in Potter Hall. They even have academic buildings of Popplewell Hall & Eder Hall (which all sounds SO Hogwartsesque), and even a clock tower that plays music in chime-form. They don't have the romantic style of the gothic-centric architecture that other schools have, but there is that Hogwarts selling point, again.

See? Missouri Western State University even has a Griffon door!

Now, I must tell you, we were taken with two of the three campuses we visited. I won't say which two right now. I will also tell you that we really felt that MAGIC in one of those places. We could sense our son's soul on 2, but could feel it settling on the one with the extra dose of magic. That's also the campus that I encountered a BUTTERFLY (if you know what that means to me), as well as a CARDINAL (which you may remember what that means, too). Again, I will not say which one at this point.

The beauty of these prestigious schools was amazing on its own. I also found it amazing how understanding these places were about how unsettled their students can be in their degree focus. They understand that what they thought they might want to do may not be the best fit for them, and the schools are willing to work with the students on finding their path. It was beautiful to know that, as a freshman in college, they may not know what they are fully wanting to do when they come in. They have an idea, but it doesn't have to be concrete. They also have ways to help them figure that out in their time on campus. Because apparently there's opportunities to try out your degree area & see if it still is a fit for you or not.

*SIDE NOTE: That's right, kids. You should NOT have to pick
your career path when you are a freshman in high school.
(some will understand this reference)

~~~~~~~~~~
All in all, though so much was crammed into a few short days, it was clear that the academic aspect was strong on this trip...and it had no shortage of Hogwarts visions in recruiting & selling. All for furthering education.
J.K. Rowling's writings of Harry Potter at Hogwarts has truly been attributed to raising awareness on so many things, like MENTAL HEALTH, diversity, a sense of belonging, and now this:
I want to take this moment to thank her for giving a sense of excitement and magic to furthering a higher education! What another wonderful piece to take away from her delightful storytelling.
And, in the near future, we'll see where the magic rests for Teen Boy....
*grabs tissue & listens to "Hedwig's Theme"*
AM~Erica is So Proud of the Accomplishments
So anyway...
It's that time of year when the school year winds down and another fiscal year is coming to a close.
This is also the time of year for the extra curricular awards banquets & ceremonies, too. And this year is no different.
Last night was one of those banquets. Teen Boy had his end-of-the-year squad awards banquet for his speech & debate squad.
Due to some unforeseen circumstances, the banquet was moved to our church! YAY!! So my son helped my hubby set up for the event.
It was catered, and the food was pretty good; there were speeches from the seniors for their farewells; there was an ongoing slideshow of all the craziness that happened within the squad thru the year; and there were awards....a whole lot of awards!
Now, we knew that Teen Boy would be getting his letter in debate...again (so a bar to add to the letter), his degree promotion for the points he's accumulated thru the year, plus he'd be bringing home his trophies he earned thru the year, too. Plus we had an idea of at least another award he'd probably get. So we were looking forward to this year. Taking it all in.
As the awards were getting going, he got his bar for both the speech and debate sides (so a bar for each), and he received his degrees of Outstanding Distinction AND Superior Distinction!
Woo Hoo!!!
Then they started giving out the squad awards. These are voted on by the squad!!
When it came time for International Extemper of the Year...it was Teen Boy. We figure that was the other one he was getting...but still...WOO HOO!!
He was also helping to present one of the awards, too. So that was fun....
But then things started going crazy!!
All of a sudden, he got honorable mention (read: 1st runner up) for Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debater of the Year AND for Varsity Congressman of the Year!!
PLUS....he was voted Varsity Public Forum Debater of the Year with his debate partner!!
Also, as officers were being announced for next year, our son wasn't called up...but....
He was appointed as the Debate Chair of the squad's annual speech & debate tournament they host!! We were SO excited!! Not necessarily surprised, but still so proud! Supposedly he didn't want it, but thought he'd throw his hat in the ring to be considered "if they needed him to do it." Apparently he's what they needed.
Oh...we started reminiscing with him at the table when the members of the year awards were being given. They were handing out the Novice-of-the-Year awards...and we were talking about when Teen Boy won one of the novice awards a couple of years ago (reminder HERE).
Then as it came time to announce the Varsity-Member-of-the-Year, within a couple of seconds of his coach talking, I started getting choked up. But I was trying to hold it in...it sounded like our son she was describing, but I would have looked like an idiot for crying for another kid. So I looked down & away as the description continued to sound like Teen Boy! And so....she called his name!!
*CRIES*
Even one of the seniors address him in her farewell speech to keep him encouraged.
Whew!! I was an emotional wreck! My hubby was an emotional wreck! We have another year of this, people. If we were this mushy for his junior year...
*ahem*
Never mind...I don't even want to think about next year. It's gonna have to be a box of tissues for all.
And then the outgoing president got up to give his closing remarks & farewell speech. This guy is a great guy...and apparently was making bets with other seniors about whether or not they'd cry during their speeches. LOL!! But...mostly because he know he was going to be a puddle of mush during his speech. One of the saddest & most touching I've ever heard.
He singled out a few of the squad members, but knew he needed to get a move on (the banquet was already nearing 4 hours long...as usual).
Then closing remarks from the coaches came. And it was a prepared statement with shocking news. News that prompted shock, silence & tears as the send off was given. A statement when prompted me to put out an open letter to our district superintendent & school board. (can be read HERE, along with the statement given that caused the chaos)
As everyone was consoling each other & the seniors were giving their last banquet hugs, the outgoing president came up to us & apologized for not singling Teen Boy out...but he said he was already a weepy mess. But he wanted our son to know how great this guy thought he was. But we were interrupted as Teen Boy walked by, so the outgoing president could run over, hug him & tell him himself.
We think he's pretty awesome. And we are so glad he's found where he belongs. And he does pretty well...
The awards, degrees, certificates, and earned trophies
(not including additional medals received for placing thru the year)
It was an emotional night. We are so proud of what Teen Boy has accomplished....and we look forward to what he'll do next year!
...but it might night be without a bunch of tears.
Stay tuned...
AM~Erica's Record Halloween
So anyway...
My favorite holiday is finally here!!
Yep...it's Halloween, folks! And I was so ready!!
If you remember when I helped with TRUNK-OR-TREAT THE OTHER NIGHT, I usually use it to unveil my Halloween costume. And it was a beautiful time that night.
Well, it was time for the big night!!
After a crazy-busy day of cable issues, needing to go to the store, needing to bring Teen Girl home from college for the weekend (she loved handing out candy last year & wanted to be back to help out again), getting dinner into the family, plus trick-or-treaters...I'm sitting here blogging in my jammies, enjoying some Antioxidant-Fortified Jesus Water (trying Apothem Dark, in case you wanted to know), and thinking about the magical night we have had.
I did serve Beastly Boo Hash (recipe HERE) for dinner, and then it was off to prep the decorations & our costumes for the night...
First was the the Beastly Boo Hash in the lazy cooker. My hubby & I were so excited for it! Apparently the kids got whiney about it. Well...BUMMER! Cuz it was SO good!!
After dinner, the pumpkin luminaries made their way to the walk way for this cold night of trick-or-treating...
I was really pleased with how the luminaries turned out, along with the front porch set up. Even though we had extra luminaries to work with...apparently we didn't have enough candles. So need to remember that for next year. But still glad we got luminaries all the way to the end of the driveway...
And we were getting on our own costumes, too!
Between Captain America, a S.H.I.E.L.D agent, and Boo (with "Kitty"), they looked great??
Then my hubby & I wanted to do our thing again, too...
And as sinister as my hubby looked...
...he had a plan...
Yeah...he was greeting trick-or-treaters peeking from above in a sinister fashion...and some did freak out...
The scene was set with our backdrop & I put a makeshift, semi-oferena altar behind me to go along with my sugar skull Day of the Dead outfit.
As I opened the door to hand out candy, Teen Girl was there to take the tally of numbers!
It started a little slow. But in 2 & a half hours...we got an amazing amount!!
Last year, I was so EXCITED BY THE NUMBERS...but this year, I did my own dance!! We had a total of...
*DRUM ROLL*
95!!!!
Oh man, oh man!! I was ecstatic!!
Plus, if you remember from the trunk-or-treat event when a sweet Mexican family came back to my car for a pic...well, it happened again! A sweet (different) Mexican family had to take my pic with the kiddos! It was so amazing!! Plus another family wanted my pic later that night, too! It was crazy!!
And Teen Girl got so many compliments on her adorable costume. I think Hubby kind of freaked people out...which kind of delighted him!
Oh...and out of the 95 trick-or-treaters...not a single Elsa, Anna or Olaf came to our door! Can you believe it?? We did see some creative costumes, and some that didn't try so hard...but it's always worth it to see kiddos (even the really big ones...like the same one who came last year as maskless Spiderman) want to join in the fun.
Then the boys wanted us to go check out a few decorations if we could. So, we shut down around 9:00 (good thing...I was pretty much out of candy), took in our luminaries, and we went to see if a couple houses were still done up from when Teen Boy escorted Lil Guy trick-or-treating. One house was still done up!! Another was in the middle of striking their set (that one's for the theater kids out there ), and the other had already closed up shop for the night.
We came back home to chill out. We originally wanted a fire in the fireplace & a Halloween movie, but it was late & we have an early morning!
That reminds me...I need to head to bed!
So despite the fact we had no wifi for most of today, which meant not being able to record the Halloween episodes of the Live with Kelly & Michael, along with The Ellen DeGeneres Show, it turned out pretty darn well!
Hope everyone had an amazing Halloween! I'm still on cloud 9 from the numbers!! Maybe I can break 100 next year?? We shall see...
And I may have plans on treats for next year, too! Like joining the Teal Pumpkin Project, and maybe even some dog treats...like for the sweet boxer who came to our door!
Until then...Happy Halloween!!
Stay tuned...(more crazy-business is coming)
AM~Erica Ran Across the 50 Yard Line
So anyway...
I've done it again...I have only been running for six weeks (as of tomorrow), and I have run 2 races...
wha-WHA???
I know. Crazy to think about!
I ran my first 5k last weekend. (reminder HERE) And that night, I signed up for another one. Ummm...happening the following weekend. Which happen to be this weekend.
If you remember my original motivation (reminder HERE), the switch in me flipped when I saw some of my non-avid runner friends doing these 5k runs covered in colors, wearing tutus & getting some bling!
Last week, the Park Trot 5k Run/Walk was OK. I ran the whole way, and I decided to wear camo & orange due to it taking place around Bass Pro. But there was limited bling to give out. Let me point out that it was a FREE run! I literally used it as my "test run". But today was different...very different!
Somehow, my hubby came across the Chiefs' Finish on the 50 [yard line] 5k Run/Walk. He thought about doing it. He asked Teen Boy if he wanted to do it. He sent some feelers out to some church friends (and a couple others) to see if they wanted to do it. And there I was...faced with whether or not to jump back into another 5k situation with very little training.
So...I signed up. I decided I would turn right around & get in on this! I mean...seriously, folks. You should know my love for my Chiefs! (find out HERE if needed)
= It was happening AT Arrowhead Stadium...the hooooome of the CHIEEEEEFS!
= It involved running into the stadium AND onto the field! THE FIELD, folks!!
= It involved getting some bling (read: a medal) for crossing the finish line.
= The finish line was ON THE 50-YARD LINE!!
= I got to wear a tutu...DUH!
What.An.Experience.
From the sheer numbers of people involved, to the prize at the end, to even the group of people I knew running it this one (which was a completely different group from last week), it was awesome!
Sadly, I didn't get the needed time in this week to really prep for this race. It was killing me that I had to walk about a quarter of a mile in the second mile stretch. I hated (yes...strong word...but it was a devil mile) the second mile.
I want to back up a bit to this past week...so please allow me this moment:
As I was trying to get some time & distance in while dealing with humidity (which hasn't been going well so far), Lil Guy has decided to give running a try & wanted to get in some running time. I knew he wasn't gonna go far, or go very fast, so I ran with him one evening. I hold my phone so I can check out my running app while on the go. I have been wanting to try to get an armband, but had not gotten to that point yet. At one point, Lil Guy assumed I was making a turn (I wasn't), and he turned abruptly in front of me, hit my hand...and my poor phone went flying & hit the sidewalk, Not. Good.
After trying not to pull a Bill Hader in a T-Mobile commercial...
...I got my screen fixed & an armband purchased! So I got to try out my new armband, too!
And I was getting it in place, as well as mentally propping myself for this 5k:
When the countdown to the start of the run began (which was awesome to hear anyway), those who were running, I took off. I was hoping to watch my pace a bit...and somehow I was going at a pretty steady 9:44-47/mi pace! I couldn't believe it! I was being passed my several...but I was in my own zone (where I prefer to be when I'm running), listening to my Beastmode playlist & listening to the clipping & clopping of the trotting & stomping of hoards of racing feet hitting the asphalt. It's such a an awesome sound. I remember hearing the sound for the first time last week.
We were told that the halfway point would have a water station where you could get your water from Chiefs TE, Sean McGrath (The Bearded Wonder, for those keeping score). I did see him handing out water, he turned his back to get more water as I ran by. I didn't want to stop!
However...the Devil Mile (read: Mile 2) had a "slight" incline & kicked my behind. It broke my heart that the sun beating down on me, the lack of getting in my distance this week, and that stupid incline really took a lot out of me. Probably my killer pace at that time, too.
I had...to...walk. *sigh*
So, I walked about a quarter of a mile off-and-on...but then the great part was coming...
When I saw the opening to THE TUNNEL, I kicked up my pace! And I could tell there was music blaring in the tunnel! So...I took out my earbuds (since I wouldn't be able to hear my music anyway), and could hear the Tomahawk Chop blaring thru speakers & bouncing off the cement walls of the tunnel! Runners started getting pumped & going crazy. Heck, a guy went flying by me like he was Rocky on the steps in Philly acting like he'd just won the race! It was exhilarating!
Last week, I finished my first 5k. I really thought I'd be really emotional about finishing it. I wasn't. I was ELATED; I certainly wasn't emotional. Color me surprised! (I'm sure it's a total Crayola color)
Today, I was going thru the tunnel...feeling like a Chiefs player...and I could see it! The light at then end of the tunnel! It was the opening to the field! That did it. I was totally verklempt & emotional by the sight & idea. I got so choked up hearing loud music blaring, the people lining the raceway...and the finish line was coming into view!
I looked to my right...and my family was there with cameras, cowbells & cheers. On my left, I could hear my name being cheered for (which was hubby, Teen Boy, and another teenager from church who ran). It was beautiful!
My non-running kiddos with cowbells
Hubby & the boys after cheering me on from the other side (since they were faster)
No, my time wasn't recorded (I'm glad this time), but I got a chocolate protein bar, a bottle of water, and my bling.
I finished. I crossed the 50 yard line. I didn't stop. I kept going...
Finish line, crowds & just getting my bling
And it was incredible!
My hubby & I have had conversations about gift-giving lately. We have discussed that "stuff" isn't as awesome anymore...but experiences are...
This was one of those experiences. I'm so glad we did it! And now...we might do the Royals 5k this summer, too!
Participating group from church - not as a team...just cheering each other on
Apparent family affair as my brother was participating too
Yes...I'm planning more 5k runs. Hey! More tutu, more bling. Bring it!
Let's do it again!
Stay tuned...
AM~Erica Having a Tough Time With It
So anyway...
I've posted about about TEEN GIRL'S BIRTHDAY, and I've posted about LIL GUY'S BIRTHDAY, too. I have not yet done a post about Teen Boy's...until now.
I think I'm having a really hard time with his. Seriously. He isn't my oldest (that's Teen Girl), but he is my older boy. And, with him being a hormonal boy...well...boys have changes that are very different from girls. Just FYI in case you didn't know that yet.
However, this post will be different from the other two. Why? Because that would not suit him at all. So, here's what's it will be instead...
If you haven't gotten it by now, today is Teen Boy's birthday. And it's exciting, but I've been having a much harder time with him turning 16. And I think it has to do with the fact that he has matured so much.
When he was born, the doctor just decided that I would be induced the following day after my appointment. However, I truly believe that he would have come along that day anyway. So when I showed up the next day to the hospital, things got moving!
I got hooked up & things seemed to move quickly. And, as with all the laborings I've been thru, I did not have a epidural. However, I'm all for IV meds. And when it is quite painful to bear, you don't think about what might be going into the tubes that flow into your veins. I was ready for the pain meds! And they told me that there was a new drug out that they wanted to try...it's called Nubain & they were still experimenting with dosages. I didn't care in that moment & they gave me some. I was told that I would feel a tingle or get really warm starting at my toes & working it's way up to relax me. Ummm...I waited a moment to see if I'd get the feeling...however, I never felt it in my toes or anywhere else...except...my head! I got really woozy & groggy. I just wanted to go to sleep! And, as I was fading & couldn't reply to anyone, I remember hearing someone yell, "Oh my God! The baby's asleep!" It was a terrifying moment to know that you have no control to step in to change that situation. I think they backed off the Nubain & upped the pitocin to get things moving again.
The doctor challenged me to have this kid born by 12:00 (noon). And, yes, things moved along that quickly that the challenge was there. And after a couple rounds of "routine" pushing, I was ready to keep going! The doctor, my hubby, the nurses, the young doctor in residency (who was having issues figuring where to check...I'll leave it at that) & the nurses in training (yes...there were a lot of people in that tiny room...there was even a medical class that walked thru) all turned away & I had to yell, "I'M! NOT! FINISHED!" They all rushed back to my side so we could finish this out!
My son was born at 12:05. Yes, just missed the target time, but not too far off.
When he was born, there was a lot of concern about him. We were being flagged that he might have something along the lines of spina bifida due to a dimple at the base of his spine. Then we were informed that he should be fine since his legs were moving normally. We were very thankful for that.
Now then, as a few months went by with this precious baby (and a very jealous older sibling), we noticed his eyes weren't following each other like they should be. As it turned out, at his 4 month checkup, it was discovered he had a cataract in one of his eyes. This became most of his identity as he was growing up. It has taken many surgeries & doctor appointments, and even off-and-on eye drops to try to keep that eye healthy. He was just a little guy with big dimples, glasses & a bit of speech impediment who was fascinated with firetrucks & rescue vehicles was very telling of his big heart.
He is an intelligent (almost frighteningly so) guy! He has found a niche in SPEECH & DEBATE. He has crazy knowledge in gaming & many other things that in nerdery & geekery. He is in advanced classes, which he is doing quite well. He is involved in church & continues to have a big heart. And he does a pretty good job keeping up with sports, too. Though he loves all the techy-type stuffs...he is really just a simple guy.
But I've been having more of an issue with my son getting older. Remember when I said that boys change differently than the girls? He's always had a little bit of a fuzzy upper lip, but when the whiskers started coming in on his chinny-chin-chin & the voice started dropping...I have not handled that well. I cried the day he shaved his face for the first time. There are no pictures of it because I couldn't handle it! It still turns my tummy thinking about it.
When his voice dropped, it freaked out Teen Girl. I went to get her out of bed & she was freaking out because she thought we had company. All she heard was the deeper voice...and I had to explain that it was her brother. Yeah...another hard one to deal with.
And now he's taller than I am, too. I didn't handle armpit hair on him well, either.
How can he be 16? Looking at pictures of when he was a tot, to when he was 11 & 12 years old...to now...he has changed so much! It's hard to think that he's the same kiddo with the speech impediment & big glasses. He no longer wears glasses, he had braces & got them off, he's taller & well-spoken...
There is so much promise in his future. Though he's still young-at-heart & still dons some immature actions...he's growing to be quite the young man.
And I'm having such a hard time with it. I really am. Just a proud parent who realizes how quickly time flies & how quickly your kiddos can grow up. Which is too quickly.
Now...off to celebrate with my growing-up-too-quickly teenage son. Who is still my baby boy...whether he likes it or not.
Stay tuned...
Even After 4 Hours, AM~Erica is Beaming
So anyway...
After Teen Girl having QUITE THE THEATRICAL WEEKEND (click on the link to read about it), we were subjected to another end-of-the-year deal...
Yes, it's that time of year when all the kids have activities going on that require award ceremonies & such. And...all of our kids are involved in totally different things. In general, that's so awesome that each kiddo can be involved in their own thing...but...it's really hard when none of these things are connected & all the end-of-year stuffs are being scheduled at the same time. Or one right after another. No rest for the weary! Amm-i-rite?
Well, tonight, we were subjected to another event. Teen Girl just finished all the play stuffs for the year, Lil Guy just finished his sports stuffs (but has some other things coming), but tonight was Teen Boy's turn.
Teen Boy's "thing" is the forensics stuff. He's part of the NFL! My dramatic friends know that is actually the National FORENSICS League. It has to do with speech (aka - competitive drama) & debate. The wall-talkers. And tonight was the night to recognize this group. We got dressed up & paid for an OK meal. We heard that Teen Boy would probably get a letter as a freshman, so we'd watch for that. But there was more!
So...he also got his Forensics degree of Excellence. I think he was recognized as degree of Honor, but not all the points were put in by the time the awards were put together. Between the points he picked up by doing both the drama AND debate side...he's accomplished a lot!
Then...THEN? Then he was also given the honorable mention (read: 1st runner up) for the team member votes as Novice Speaker of the Year! WOOT! Cuz he's in a large novice class this year. So this was huge!
Then do you see the red plaque, too? If we weren't already proud enough...this one came...
These plaques given were chosen by the coaches. The Outstanding Member Awards were to be given!
The debate coach stood up & started describing a young man up for the Novice NFL of the Year award. As she described him...we realized it wasn't Teen Boy. This was OK. It was his 1st year & was planning on sticking with it. But then she held up another Novice of the Year plaque & began describing another young man who she said would become obvious in a moment. At first, it sounded like Teen Boy...but she started saying that this young man would track her down, either by text or other means, to make sure she knew about any & all current events. She also said this young man would pour much of his extra time into helping out team members better prepare for debate & extemporaneous events. And then it happened...
She called out Teen Boy's name!!!!
Please pardon my crazy-mama reflection. That plaque is SHINY!!
Yes...I burst into tears! Hubby welled up. Even Teen Girl got emotional...which that's kind of a big deal.
Holy cannoli! Even the hardcore seniors...the ones that my son aspires to be...gave him a standing ovation and stopped him to shake his hand in congrats. These are national qualifying team members, folks. Even ones that have finished in the top 10 nationally. And they were right there to root on my son!
We. Are. Beaming.
The nearly 4 hours didn't seem so bad when we knew it was Teen Boy's time to shine...we just didn't realize how much more brightly compared to others.
Oh...and by the way...he lettered, too.
AM~Erica is a Proud Parent
So anyway...
Teenagers are crazy. Mine make me insane. But that's not really news. But sometimes...SOMETIMES...there are moments when one of them shocks me. Yesterday was one of those days.
Brace yourselves...I'm about to gush over teenagers!! Ready??
TEEN GIRL (yep...believe it or not) has been trying to really work at getting noticed in the theater & music departments. That's her dream...Broadway & musical theatre! Her freshman year, she tried out for the fall musical "Hello Dolly." She got in as a chorus member, but we had to pull her out of the production, very unfortunately. Then she didn't even try out for the winter comedy or spring drama. But, her sophomore year, she tried out for the fall musical, "Annie." This is a musical that has been triumphant and heartbreaking many times over in this family. For my daughter, this would be the 3rd time she would be involved. The first 2 times, she was cast as an orphan; the first time was Kate, the next time around, she was Duffy. Yep, always an orphan...but not THE orphan she wanted to be so badly. She, indeed, wanted to be Annie.
Even though I am biased as a parent, I am also a realist as a parent. If my kid is good for a role, I will help them prepare for that; if they want a role they are not fitting for, I will try to redirect them. And, having a theatre/forensic/music background, I am also well aware that directors will be looking for what they want or need. So, I always give the pep talk before auditions, before callbacks & before casting:
Auditions speech:
"Go do what you can. Stay focused on what you need to do. Be willing to take whatever role is offered. Go give them your very best & prove to them what you can do. Break a leg!"
Callbacks speech:
"Callbacks are if anyone needs to be looked at again for some reason. If you make callbacks, it's fine...they just want or need to hear or see you again. If you don't make callbacks, it's fine...that means you've done what you can & you don't need to be seen again. Making callbacks doesn't necessarily mean you got a part & not making callbacks doesn't mean you didn't get a part. Just hold out for casting. You've done all you can at this point. If you do make callbacks, give it all you've got & do your best."
Casting speech:
"OK, remember...you did all you can & it's been all up to the director. If you get in, that's fantastic! If not, it means there wasn't a perfect spot for you in the directors eyes. Still help out with crew. But, if you do make it, and it is not a part you want, do not be disappointed! Be the best at whatever part you are given. Always. And if you get a bigger part, do not be a diva about it! Work together as a cast & a family. No matter what happens, it will be fine & you are still loved. Break a leg!"
Yes, this speech is given...
Every. Single. Time.
Teen Girl hates hearing it, but she knows it's coming...because she needs the reminder.
Even though that girl was SO perfect for Annie, and she knew this would be her only remaining time to possibly be cast in the role, she held out hope...again. And her director has been very clear that if a freshman or sophomore was perfect for a lead role, they would be the ones cast...being an upper classman had nothing to do with casting. So...this was it! But I did tell her to brace...if she didn't get Annie, she would be an orphan...again.
So...
        She...
                 Got...
...the part of July...another orphan. She was so sad. I was so sad for her. A freshman got the role. And was quite a snot about it, too.
I was very proud of my daughter. She took the role & did it wonderfully...as always.
She didn't try out for the winter comedy or the spring drama though. She didn't think she'd be able to & never told us about auditions. She asked if she could watch friends do callbacks. The director told us he was disappointed that we didn't let her try out...we set him straight.
So...then came this year's fall musical. They did "The King & I". *insert speeches here* She was holding out for Tuptim. She got one of the king's wives. And? She really doesn't like the girl that got Tuptim, either. Oh well...Teen Girl did very well! She even got to dance! *Proud Mama*
And then, auditions for the winter comedy & spring drama. The comedy will be "Arsenic & Old Lace." Teen Girl so wanted to be one of the aunts...hilariously & sweetly killing guys & all. The spring drama is "The House of Bernarda Alba." OK...as you can imagine...*insert speeches here* She really wanted the part of Martha, but knew she would need to deal with what ever she got...if anything at all. Well, after the Casting Speech from mom...she got word of whether or not she would be in either play...
Well...
          She's in one of them...
The drama...
                   as...
                           ADELA ALBA!
*GLITTER CONFETTI CANNONS & FIREWORKS*
She is a major part in the drama. She is the youngest & most defiant daughter. (Probably why she was cast, but that's beside the point.) We are so proud of her!! *GUSHES*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is not the only gushy announcement, people! Are you still holding on? I actually have to brag on Teen Boy, too!!

Wha-WHA??? Gushing about TWO teenagers in the same post? What is this world coming to??

*ahem*

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As some of you know, TEEN BOY is involved in competitive speech & debate. He's a freshman. He went to his 5th tournament this season. From what I hear, he & his duo partner are REALLY good. Well, he went triple entered at the tournament this weekend. We got word yesterday that he & his partner broke to finals!! So...no matter what...THEY PLACE!! Woo Hoo!! So, he went back today for the finals round. And?
Well...
          they took...
                           5th Place!
*CONFETTI CANNONS & FIREWORKS*
(I took out the glitter just for him)
We are so proud of our teens. Can you believe it? Hubby & I are beaming & gushing over them this weekend!
And, I'm not gonna leave out LIL GUY...
He is getting ready to have a good size role in our church Christmas play...he is going to be the voice of the cow puppet! And he's got a lot of lines, too!
We are proud parents! Can you tell?
*sigh with pride*
Stay tuned...
AM~Erica, Sock it to Me!
So anyway...
Yep, another one of those days when I needed to post twice. And this one doesn't even go with my earlier post today. But, trust me...
First thing you need to know is that there has been a general consensus from many-a-folk that I was probably born too late. Like WAY too late! I should've been spending late teens/early-to-mid 20's in the 60's. Totally Mod 60's! Mid-60's to early 70's! I would've totally been groovin'! But since I wasn't, I can still celebrate it for sure. I love all things 60's. Fashion, music, icons, patterns, shows...I think it's all groovy! Have you paid attention to my new digs? Now that you know this, I will go on to my story. But remember this point; it's important!
Another important point is that I hate feet. Baby feet are adorable & fine...but once you hit the age of 2, all bets are off! I want to vomit! That's part of why I like shoes & toenail polish...anything to pretty up those nasty body stands. Once again, also important to my story.
So what do the 60's & nasty feet have to do with my evening? Read on...
Tonight was a typical-type night at our house: lil guy wanting to play cards. Not poker or anything...he wants to play Uno! Since hubby had a meeting, I played a few rounds with Teen Boy & Lil guy. And since the boys still have clumsy fingers & I can shuffle the deck like a dealer at a table (that's a joke, people...but I keep shufflin'), I started to shuffle the deck for one of the boys. Then...lil guy thinks he's being super cute by "accidentally" bumping his toes on me. ICK!!!! So I ask him nicely (I swear) to please stop putting his toes on me. He laughs...evily. Teen Boy always gets a kick out of being annoying & enjoys trying to join in on any annoying situation. It's annoying. He laughs...evily. He tries to put his feet on me, but I stop him with my mommy words! So he tries to find a loophole in that he is wearing socks...
This brings 2 things:
1. The socks are still involved in the whole foot thing. So...no.
2. This brings a song to my head...and I must...start...singing...
OK, another thing you need to know about me is the fact that I will start singing a song if you say something that makes me think of a song to sing. It happens so often that hubby & Teen Girl have picked up the habit. My legacy must carry on somehow...
So, I begin to sing,"...SOCK-IT-TO-ME, SOCK-IT-TO-ME, SOCK-IT-TO-ME, SOCK-IT-TO-ME..."
And I can't stop. I have to sing more of the song! "You're kisses, sweeter than honey!" Teen Boy is not amused & is begging me to stop singing. But I can't stop...and he asks me to stop singing that (brace yourselves, people) "horrible song"! *GASP* wha-WHA?????
I have Laugh-In scenes going thru my head! I hear Aretha belting out needing respect! And I've got Teen Boy dogging the song.
Teen Boy: Stop singing that horrible & stupid song! It sounds really old! Is it like from the 80's or something?
Me: Excuse me?? That song is called "Respect" from the one & only Aretha Franklin. And it's from the 60's. It's a classic.
Teen Boy: Yeah...I thought it was really old. And it's still one of the stupidest songs I've heard.
Me: *GASP* WHAT???? Did you just say the 80's are "really old"???
Teen Boy: Uh...yeah.
Me: *sings* "R-E-S-P-E-C-T! I'll tell ya what it MEANS to me! R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Take care: TCB! Oh! SOCK-IT-TO-ME, SOCK-IT-TO-ME, SOCK-IT-TO-ME..."
*sigh* Where have I gone wrong? Now I am worried about the music tastes of some of this up & coming generation.
I might go cry now.
Stay tuned...
God Bless, AM~Erica
