AM~Erica is Quietly Thankful in Tradition

So anyway...

A couple of days ago, our family took part in  a day that so many other families do on the 4th Thursday of every November: feasting and giving thanks.

Don't get me wrong, gratitude is regularly given, but this is supposed to be some sort of beautiful culmination with others on THIS day.

Our day began as it has the past several years. Some background first:

When we moved back to the KC area after 3 years in St. Louis, it became easier to handle holidays like this one. Why? Because our family was pretty much all in KC. It was good to be home! However, when we returned, it became apparent that gathering at my grandmother's house for brunch (as we had done for so many years, as far back as I can remember) may be difficult. Not only for her, but to get all of us out there, and to make sure food was brought in. So we decided that we would love to host the Thanksgiving brunch at our house. So, like Captain Picard's #1, we made it so.

My grandmother made about 3 of the years, but got to where she didn't feel comfortable leaving her abode. Those years, we made a point to take her some dessert so someone could be with her.

Also in the past, we would have big dinners with my in-laws. As time & circumstances scooted around in many different ways & forms, we decided to host the evening meal, too. After my grandmother passed (still missing her dearly), and with some topsy-turvy craziness, we were holding the meal at our house.

Now then, we still held our brunch with my folks & brother, as we've done for several years now. We cooked up eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, fried potato hash browns, and cinnamon rolls. With some kitchen renovations going on at my parents' house, we cooked everything. Which was fine by us. We actually keep it simple enough to be able to do so.

After a really nice visit with my folks, they left to go out to my uncles for the afternoon/evening. This is when we would generally get ready for my in-laws to come that afternoon & evening for the big meal...but this year was different.

Most of the in-laws had moved over the spring & summer. With some health issues & other circumstances, none of them would be coming to our house. Now then, we did let one of them know they were welcome to come, as my sister-in-law is in town due to life circumstances - so we made sure to let her know she could come over & we would have food.

As it turned out, she had gone ahead & made plans with a friend she was staying with. Sad she couldn't join us, but it was OK.

There was so much rain! It just rained, and rained, and rained...
My hubby had gotten a new (to us) smoker from my dad. My hubby was really excited to use it to smoke our turkey AND ham for the evening's feast! With scooting our patio table closer to the smoker to put the umbrella up to protect the smoker a bit, it was a crazy-ingenius way to keep the smoker going.

Eventually I made most of the other dishes, and my hubby took over the yams & rolls.

By the time dinnertime rolled around we had a delightful spread:

First up is the meat. My hubby smoked a beautiful turkey & ham. It was his first time EVER to brine a turkey, and even smoke a turkey. Everything was smokey-delicious & was better than restaurant worthy...in our family's own humble opinion.

The kiddos voted to have mac and cheese as a side, of course. So I bumped it up to Pirate's Booty brand aged white cheddar shells and cheese, then added a sprinkle of parsley to make it appear fancier. Kids loved it! YAY!

My hubby took care of the yams. Simple yams with a few marshmallows to be warmed & toasted in the oven.

I make the cranberry sauce! Homemade stuff around here. It makes me happy when I get to make it.
(recipe HERE)

When we were originally putting our menu together, we talked to the kiddos about what they might want. Teen Boy, one of our pickier eaters, said that he couldn't imagine the Thanksgiving feast without things like cranberries, stuffing/dressing, and mashed potatoes. No, he doesn't eat any of those things...but he just felt like it wasn't the holiday if missing this sort of montage of dishes.

With that said, and we obviously chose cranberries, we were deciding whether to do mashed potatoes or stuffing. I brought up doing colcannon as our mashed potatoes. My hubby was thrilled with the thought! So, colcannon is what was decided upon. And it might have been my best batch yet!
(recipe included HERE)

We knew we needed rolls. I put my hubby in charge of the rolls, and he chose these bread rounds that were about the size of Lil Guy's head!

We got the feast finished up & placed onto the table as Teen Girl was getting the simple table settings ready.

The plated feast

Shortly after our bellies were satisfied, we realized we forgot something - the green beans! I forgot to steam them! Since this was the case, we decided to save them. As green bean casserole is not the biggest hit around here (I mean...I like it), I try to keep it a healthier option by sautéing mushrooms & onions to add to the steamed green beans, plus toasting some almonds, for a beautiful hericots verts (harrah-co vay) dish.

After enjoying all of this around the table, Teen Girl brought up wanting to play some Apples to Apples.

When our family plays this game, wildness generally ensues! Just when you think you've won the judge with your card, there's one that seems to beat yours...OR...everyone has a throwaway card because nothing matches, and the judge has to pick from a selection of nothing that goes with the main card. We laugh until we cry, often. Also, we found the weirdest way to end the game! As we made our way to the last round, and the last person (who just happened to be me in this case), there was a consensus to make the judge pick 3 rounds of selections for the same card just to get rid of cards! It was evilly hilarious, and we may keep this ending to the game for future play.

Then we moved onto our first night of our 4th annual holiday movie/treat run!
(some past tradition interminglings HERE)

This year, we drew our numbers right before Thanksgiving. With Teen Boy drawing the ol' #1, we decided to get things rolling with his picks on Thanksgiving night - especially since there's 5 of us picking as we lead up to Christmas.

I decided to make the fudge. When I made it 3 years ago, it didn't set. We had a fudge butter! Not a bad thing, but it was interesting eating it with a spoon. This time, it totally set up & it was near perfect! YAY!

Teen Boy became hesitant about his movie choice. He seemed gravely disappointed that he might have to change his selection when he learned we were going to watch "A Christmas Carol" performed just a couple of days prior. (reminder HERE with yet another update) However, I did inform him we could keep it as such, and there was no reason to change.

See, they are two different tellings of the story! After we watched the movie, we got to discuss the differences, what we liked & what we didn't.

We saw the movie in the theater when it came out in 2009. We were surprised by how close to the story it seemed, and how not-over-the-top it was for a Jim Carrey movie! It seemed to stay pretty close to the original telling. Some variance, but surprisingly subdued, yet beautiful.

As we got through with this viewing, especially with the one-man-show storytelling of Gerald Dickens, we discussed what was different, what was the same, what we liked & didn't.

Then it hit me! It has been SO many years since I've really read the book. I've taken it for granted & have just heavily leaned on all the different tellings on stage or screen for many years. After pointing out one glaring inconsistency in nearly every telling I've come across, it got me thinking that I really want to read it again. The Mid-Continent Libraries have done their job in bringing in Mr. Dickens to tell the story! I am really wanting to read it again! On pages, and between front & back covers. I'm yearning for the words of Charles Dickens. So I must get on that!

With all of that said & done, plus a couple of glasses of Antioxidant Fortified Jesus Water enjoyed, it was time to call it a night, know that I'm thankful for all we have, for the quiet we got to take in, the roof over my head, the family under it with me, the food we are able to provide, and traditions we can take in, no matter how weird they may seem sometimes. God is so good!

Thankfully, we had enough leftovers to enjoy for another meal. My hubby pointed out that it seemed less glamorous the next night; but even with the food being served from storage containers & on paper plates, it was still just as delightful as it was the night before.

And now we are moving forward into our full-blown Christmas season! Time to prepare an ongoing skit with the hubby for church, as well as a dance to help start the liturgical season of Advent.

In the midst of it all, so thankful. Here's to our own traditions! *CHEERS*

Stay tuned...

AM~Erica Finds a Different Way to Remember

So anyway...

It is that time of year, folks. A time of lights, trees, wrapping paper with lovely ribbons & bows, shiny ornaments, get togethers, mad-dash shopping, baking, cooking, photos, big guy in red, Nativity scenes...
Yep. It's Christmastime. Can you feel it?

As much as we love Christmas in our own house, we've been too stressed out & pulled too many directions to ever really enjoy it the last couple of years. We've had a couple of years where we just were having trouble feeling the season's spirit; having trouble finding the meaning.

Don't get me wrong. We KNOW what it's about! There's no mistaking it. We just couldn't get in tune with it. When things are too rushed, too filled, too much to just be able to breathe it in & focus. Then the time is gone...and we are even more disappointed that it's time to pack everything away & we didn't get to...well...just...be.

I'm not exactly sure what became different this year. It just seemed easier to move into this time of year. It's going to fast...but it felt right.

We changed some things. Our main tree set up is different.

That's right. We have a forest. This was actually a fun & awesome idea from my hubby! The big, main tree is actually a tree we've had for several years, it has been set up for the last 3 years (never taken down) downstairs, and now has it's chance to shine as the main tree! I love how it all turned out.
Oh...and our new North Pole-trained wrapping elves, Elof & Winka, have been hard at work so far!

I have also been wanting to do a Scandinavian-style tree since I started researching TO CELEBRATE LEIF ERICSSON DAY! The more I got looking into the Norse & Norwegian celebrations & customs, I was taken by the simplicity of the God Jul trees. So, I worked it where I could have that in my own home!

We had the old popcorn tins, so I set up a couple tiny trees to hold a few more ornaments. It's still a work in progress, but I'm loving how it's coming out!! Maybe more on this set up when it's all done...

Then, if you remember when my mom & daughter went with me to DECORATE A TREE FOR MARILLAC, I had some ornaments left over. Plus, I'd gotten some clearance ornaments for that tree, but couldn't find them when it came time to go decorate. Well...I found a bunch of what I'd gotten (figures), and so I thought I'd use them for the house. I used another tree we had stored to put downstairs. I began to place the browns & golds on & around the tree. I found a golden bird ornament that seemed to be featured. It has this great feather tail! As I finished up, I thought it needed a little something...so...I remembered I had, at one time, purchased some brown, off white, and deep red feathers for some decorating! So I grabbed them & added them to the tree!

Even though some of the lights are out, I'm so happy with this adorable tree. With some of my mom's prompting, I've decided to call it "Fine Feathered Fantasy." It's quite elegant! The pictures don't do it justice.

We also started a tradition a couple of years ago. Each person in the household draws a number (around Thanksgiving-ish). This is the order each person will choose 2 things: a Christmas movie/special & a holiday treat to pair with it. Everyone joins in! No electronics during this time! We do this about once a week up to Christmas, as scheduling allows. This year, I was up first!

We got this really awesome chalkboard, and I was lost as to what to use it for during Christmastime. One side is our countdown...

...then I decided to use the other side to keep everyone apprised of the next family holiday movie/treat thingy.

For my night, I "made" gingerbread cookies & decorated them!

Then served 'em up with egg nog for night #1 2014 as we settled in to watch "Elf"!

I must tell you that I was not a fan of this movie the first time I saw it. However, the more I watch it, the more I love it! It's beginning to move it's way up the list as a favorite!

Oh! And I'm pretty much the only one who really likes gingerbread! But I found Nestle Tollhouse put out ready-made cookie dough sheets! Really...all you have to do is put your cookie cutters to 'em & bake! And? My family LOVED this version of gingerbread! BOOM! I was happy with how the season started off.

That's a way to get the holidays rolling, for sure! Next up will be Lil Guy's picks:

Looking forward to his turn!

As we prepare for that, there was something else that is different about this year. LOSING MY GRANDMOTHER. Man...all the Christmases in my life included her. Even if we had to shuffle a couple things around, we were always at her house to start the last run of Christmas events. This year...we won't. It won't be at her place, anyway.
Part of what made this time difficult was the fact that my grandmother was to turn 94...yesterday. *sigh*
The last few years, the family would gather to celebrate her birthday, and then as part of her gift, I would put up & decorate her Christmas tree.

My grandmother's tree I decorated, circa 2012

With her birthday being in December, and she loved her red birds (the actual bird, not the baseball team), and with her deep spiritual relationship, I came up with a grouping of decor that included "snow", cardinals (some nesting), and an angel topper for her fiberoptic tree. I called it "Heaven and Nature Sing." She loved looking at her red birds accented by the snow. She loved she could see them even if the lights on the tree weren't on.

This year, that didn't happen. And it won't happen. And it's sad.

In the faux forest of Christmas trees that hubby dreamed up, he thought maybe 4 trees. Ambitious, amm-i-rite? But the last one I saved. I decided that I would decorate it on December 4th. I wanted to add poinsettias to it since it's the flower readily associated with December. I also added 4 jingle bell snowman ornaments to this tree. My grandmother gave each of the kids one several years ago...each snowman has one of their names. And now they hang on the memory December tree in her memory. I will be finding at least one cardinal to place on the tree. I should have it soon...or it wouldn't be right.

Last year when we put up her tree, NBC was airing "Sound of Music Live!" We were watching some of it as we put up the tree, at the time we could gather for her birthday. My Lil Guy had trouble remembering that. Not in the fact of remembering...he was sad remembering it. Last year, we didn't know that would be the last time we would be doing that for her. He's still hurting from her loss, too. However, how fitting that NBC would be airing "Peter Pan Live!" on the night I would be decorating the tree in memory of my grandmother.

As I continue to grieve her absence & as we plan onward, we realize there's so much to do! We've got gatherings to attend, we have Christmas programs to put on. I'm even planning on channeling my grandmother as I attempt to make some candies & cookies this year.

We actually have lights up on our house, too! That hasn't happened for a couple of years, either! And...I've got another tree to put up in the kitchen. Be watching for that!

Ah...yes. That time of year is upon us. And this time, I feel merry & bright! Things will be different. But we are making the most of it! Looking forward to continuing on with our beautiful Advent season. My grandmother would want that happen...

Stay tuned...

A Christmas Poem From AM~Erica

So anyway...

I penned this in 2006 to be a children's nativity play. I thought it would be fairly easy to track down a version of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" with a spin of the telling of the Nativity Story to be adapted into a narrative children's Nativity play. To my shock...there wasn't. So, with a copy of the original poem, a plate of pumpkin pancakes & some coffee at IHOP, and opening myself up to His Word & guidance...I just wanted to be a vessel in His storytelling. And this is what happened. And we did a play that year.

And I wanted it to have the same kind of feel of being gathered around the selected family member to read the story of the night before Christmas by the fire, everyone in their jammies getting ready for bed in anticipation for the following morning...

So, I have made it an annual thing to share it with anyone who is willing to read it.

As your Christmas season winds down, don't forget what was actually going on that night. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

(a few revisions to wording from it's original debut...still the same story)

I bring to you now, "'Twas the Night That was Christmas":

~~~~~~~~~~
'TWAS THE NIGHT THAT WAS CHRISTMAS
‘Twas the night that was Christmas, when all through the stable,
not a creature was stirring beneath the barn’s gable.
The signage was hung outside the inn with care
with the statement of “No Vacancy” there.
Poor Joseph, with Mary about to give birth,
traveled to Bethlehem to pay up their worth.
Only a stable stall left to shelter Mary from danger
so she could bear a son and place Him in a manger.
***
The shepherds were resting upon the hillside
of Bethlehem’s outskirts, where their sheep do reside;
after making sure no wolf was around,
they took a nap right there on the ground.
When all through the skies, there arose such a clatter!
The shepherds sprang up to see what was the matter;
they each picked up their staff and their sash
to see that an angel appeared in a flash!
Please, don’t hurt us,” they shouted and prayed;
the angel of God said, “Do not be afraid:
I bring you glad tidings with good news to tell!
The Savior is here in a manger knell.
Then heavenly hosts joined in from above
to help deliver this message of love:
Glory to God in the highest, and peace on the Earth
to all whom His favor rests,” was sung of the birth.
Now run, see the babe in swaddling clothes –
you will find Him in the stable where the large starlight shows.
We give you our word, and on angels’ wing
your flocks will be safe as you bow to the King!
***
Now there were magi from the Orient, afar,
who studied the skies and found a new star.
They told this king, Herod, by name,
and he sent them to follow after making this claim:
If this leads you to the ‘King of the Jews,’
please come tell Herod so he can praise the little King, too.
But the magi knew (because they are wise)
that what Herod wanted was the baby’s demise.
So, off they set, with no plan to return,
bringing with them gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
The journey was long to find Joseph and wife,
and the baby boy Savior, who would change every life.
That star shown brightly, much more than the moon;
a spotlight for the One delivering God’s people soon!
The stage is now set for those who come by
to listen to the mother sing a soft lullaby.
Now lay there, the babe in the manger stall,
being adored by those who received the great call.
So tiny, yet regal, in such a low place,
adorning a halo surrounding His face.
God chose to come to the Earth as a child –
(to be with, and like, the ones that He’d styled)
as a sweet baby boy in a place so lowly,
to arise so divine, and perfect, and holy.
The time has now come to worship and sing
that Jesus Christ is crowned Savior and King!
Now the Savior is here to save us from strife!
So…Merry Christmas to all, and to all, eternal life!
~~~~~~~~~~

Merry Christmas, everyone! May it be merry, bright, meaningful & thoughtful.

Stay tuned...

AM~Erica Took it Down

So anyway...

Now that the THANKSGIVING & CHRISTMAS COOKIES ARE FINALLY BAKED, it was time to move along with the next thing in the holiday cycle...

Taking down the decorations!

Yes, it is January 11th, and we have never had the decorations up this long after Christmas!

For years, my hubby couldn't stand having the decorations up after Christmas. We were literally stripping the decked halls a day or two after the actual holiday celebration. Something about not being able to see the abundance of beautifully decorated boxes that fed anticipation was just too sad for him.

In the past very few years, he's been able to leave up the tree & all until about New Year's Day...and that was really stretching it for him. But with the CRAZINESS HAPPENING IN OUR HOUSE throughout the holiday season, it made things more challenging.

In the midst of NEW CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS, we decided we would leave up our tree & decor until Epiphany (which is January 6th, also known to be Three Kings Day and the 12th day of Christmas...which is for totes realz, people).

Well, Epiphany came & went...and the tree was still up, with no boxes to even house the decor elsewhere. It was staying put. Life still happened & thwarted our plans...again. *sigh* But we bought new decorations at after-Christmas clearance sales...so we kept decorating the tree anyway...and we were enjoying how it will look next year.

However, with the cookies baked (and only partially eaten), the egg nog is expired, the extras moved out (mostly), the Christmas stuff is FINALLY taken down (mostly)! *WHEW*

And how do we prep for getting the stuff taken down? By putting on music, of course! Just like we enjoy listening to Christmas music as our decorations take a whole day or longer to go up, we had quite an eclectic playlist for the 45 minutes to an hour to take it all down.

As we took down the ornaments, wreaths, garland, stockings, knick-knacks & the tree, we jammed to Lady Gaga, Florence & the Machine, the Beatles...and many, many more! We danced, did lip syncing, and outright belted out some tunes to make things move faster. "Bad Romance", "Hurt", "Dog Days are Over", "Fix You", "Twist & Shout" are all just a small part of our interesting playlist...that we never totally got thru. But there was some seriously good tunes as we got everything down.

And you know what? We have a lot more room around here! And you know what else? It really does take way longer to put things up than to take things down.

That's crazy talk, folks!

Anyone else with some procrastination issues in taking down their Christmas stuff? I mean besides the Christmas tree we left up for over a year that we really will take down this time... (oh...I have shamed myself...again)

If it matters at all...we are making plans for the ENCHANTED FOREST TREE ENTRY for this coming year, as well as our ornament additions (which we've been testing out to see how the look...cuz, well, you know...the tree was still up), and what to do with that downstairs tree...that we really are gonna take down & then put back up several months from now...

OK...a bit blurry...but here's the star we are gonna use next year

Better overall pic...but with the topper being used for the tree downstairs next year...
...and the same topper will be used for the Enchanted Forest entry next year, too.

Found large, glittery bells & large Santa suit ornaments on clearance...
...so we added them to the tree to see what they looked like.

Another pic of big glittery bells & you can see some Santa suit ornaments.
We forgot about the poinsettia additions...so added those, too.

Looking forward to seeing our big tree like this next year...for the whole season. *sigh*

Stay tuned...

AM~Erica is Still Sharing Christmas

So anyway...

I know after a HARSH POST TO START THE NEW YEAR, I realized I hadn't caught you all up on the conclusion of our NEW FAMILY CHRISTMAS TRADITION and it's FOLLOW UP about what the next ones were...but never gave the conclusion. And...I know you were just holding your breath, waiting to hear how we finally did it...

Amm-I-rite?

Well, you are a funny color of blue-purply...I don't even know what color that is. So let it out & I will be happy to share with you the last couple of movies & treats we went to for newfound tradition of picking Christmas movie & Christmas treat...

So....since there is a BUNCH OF PEOPLE IN OUR HOUSE right now, it took us a while to get thru everyone's picks. I've already shared the first 5 rounds with you...so here's the wrap up with the final 2:

6. "The Grinch" with milk chocolate AND dark chocolate cordial cherries

7. "Scrooged" with Riverboat Red: Smooth Sweet Red wine/Welch's Sparkling Red grape juice

Overall...what a fun tradition this was to start!! And, with 7 of us choosing this time (it will be less next year, I'm sure), we still had several movies & specials we would have liked to get into the mix. So...maybe we will each get double orders next year. But who knows? It was all so much fun anyway!

We do already have some other traditions we'd like to start next year. It was a bit hectic to start them this time around. But everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Now we will have some rules with our newfound tradition to enforce next year:

A. Everyone participates...no matter who picked the movie/treat & what it is! (however, some exceptions can be made in treats if an individual does not like what was chosen)

2. Absolutely no extra electronic gadgets! Participating in a family thing is mandatory! We are creating memories, dang it!

III. (this one has not been fully discussed, but I'm putting it out there anyway) We all get in our pajammies! Oh yeah! I mean...why not?

OK...now I think you all are caught up with our traditions & our SEATTLE FAMILY TRIP. I don't think I'm behind in filling you all in with much more. WHEW!!!

The only thing left is to remind you that the 12 Days of Christmas is going on right now. December 25th begins the 12 days. And whoever is giving their true love so many birds needs their head examined! We are on day 9 today. So we have gotten past any of the gifts for the birds...and now it calls for ladies dancing. Simmer down, people...I'm not exactly going to give you that...but...how about 9 Lady Dancers?

Yes...I am one of these 9 Lady Dancers in this fabulously early 90's dance pic.
And...we decided to keep up our Christmas tree(s) up until Epiphany...you know, the 12th day of Christmas! This is a huge change for us. But I like it. Oh...look! Another traditions change/start!

We are on the ball!

Stay tuned...

AM~Erica's Taste Buds are Having a Christmas Party

So anyway...

The holiday season is moving right along. And there hasn't been any shortage of events to attend! And, even though things are crazy-insane, and I try my best to keep up, I don't mind. I love looking festive & enjoying festive activities & goodies. I love joining in the songs, or singing some myself. I even have a couple of really fun Christmas song stations on Pandora that get me going while I'm driving around or just getting ready to go. Love it!

And, as I stated before, our family has STARTED A NEW TRADITION with each family member in the house choosing a Christmas movie for everyone to watch while also choosing a Christmas treat to enjoy. Since the last post about this, we have also enjoyed:

4. "Polar Express" with Christmas brownies (brownies w/ festive sprinkles)

This is what Lil Guy & I looked like for the movie.
No, we didn't watch the movie in 3D, we just really liked how the glasses made everything else look before we started watching the movie. That's how we roll.

5. "A Christmas Story" with Egg Nog Mousse & Gingerbread Streusel Trifle

I will have to confess that the latter of the 2 mentioned is mine. I love "A Christmas Story"...and will quote it All Year Long! And I wanted something different for my treat. No one picked gingerbread. I know it's not everyone's thing, but I have really come to enjoy me some gingerbread!

My thought was to actually make some gingerbread cookies, even though I've never tried them before. But Lil Guy has been kind of a sicky the last couple of days, so I haven't really had the chance to concentrate on baking...or much else, for that matter.

I don't know what made me think of it, but I kind of created something...and it's not even a monster this time! Impressed?

Instead, since someone had already chosen egg nog (which is another holiday time fave of mine), and since I've picked up a knack for playing in the kitchen this year (thanks to Pinterest & my own brainy-brain), I decided to combine the 2: I made an egg nog mousse (a slightly adapted recipe I found) & then created a gingerbread streusel since I couldn't find a recipe for one anywhere.

You know what? As I did "quality control" (*wink, wink*), I could tell my tastes buds were having a Christmas party in my mouth!!! And you know what? Festive tastes delicious!

We have had some tiny dessert spoons tucked away for a very long time. I, then, found some tall shot glasses at Target for $1 each. So I am making a trendy dessert shot that is all Christmas-y & stuff! And I turned them into tiny trifles.

Here's how...

EASY EGG NOG MOUSSE
Ingredients
1 lg pkg instant vanilla pudding mix
3 ½ C VERY cold prepared egg nog
1 sm tub whipped topping

Directions
1. Mix instant pudding mix & egg nog together, whisking for about 2 minutes
2. Let set in the refrigerator for about 5 minutes, or until set
3. Remove from the refrigerator & add in the tub of whipped topping, whisking together until fully mixed together
4. Place back into refrigerator to set until slightly firm
5. Serve

During step 2, I made the streusel.

GINGERBREAD STREUSEL
Ingredients
1 C flour
1 C brown sugar, packed
¼ C butter, softened
1 ½ T ground ginger
1 ½ T ground cinnamon
1 t ground cloves
¼ t ground nutmeg
1 T water
          Directions
Mix all ingredients together until crumbly

It's easy as that, folks! Then, to make the trifle, I layered these 2 items with some dehydrated tiny marshmallows!

Order of trifle layers in tall shot glasses:
Gingerbread Streusel, Egg Nog Mousse, tiny marshmallows, Egg Nog Mousse, Gingerbread Streusel topper

So adorable, so festive, so tasty!

And then...we have just a couple more movies to go.

So...stay tuned...

God Bless, AM~Erica

UPDATE: Wednesday morning, December 19, 2012

I was so taken with my dessert from last night, I wanted it for breakfast. But how do I pass it off without looking totally insane? (Hey! I hear you laughing at that!) By pretending it's a dish from IHOP & adding it to pancakes:

Yep, I totally piled the mousse on top of the pancakes & then topped that with the streusel...and with red, green & white sprinkles. You know, to visually give it that holiday touch...like at IHOP!

Oh...and...YUM!!!

AM~Erica Wants to Celebrate Festively, Simply & Nostagically

So anyway...

If you haven't figured out that Christmas time has set in, you must be living the hermit life under PATRICK STAR'S rock. But seriously...have you noticed?

Well, it is everywhere. There is no way around it. Like a game of dodgeball: you can duck, you can dodge, but you will be hit with it. Like a big game of Dodge-snow-ball, you get hit with it & it gets everywhere!!

So here we are, dealing with it the best we can...planning, dealing, shopping, prepping, stressing...to make sure the whole Christmas fantasy is perfect & that we can do it all within about 3-4 weeks. And when I say "do it all," I'm talking about our usual routine along with the other 5874.369375 (I'm pretty sure that's an accurate number) things that we want to do on top of that to help get us in that Christmas spirit. Amm-i-rite? The hustle & bustle is what we brace for...and just let it happen!

Guess what! It turns out that marketeering (I don't know if that's even a real word, but I'm using it as such) is taking advantage of that, and has been the last several years. Do you want to know how? Do ya...? Well...DO YA??? Well, I'm going to tell you anyway...

Nostalgia, people. Seriously. They are tugging at our nostalgic & sentimental heartstrings by bringing back our childhood products, memories & decorations in hopes we will buy them so our kiddos (who may or may not even care) can have that same feeling and experience we did. Sneaky & tricky, amm-i-rite?

You know those times when you come across some of those things (toys, treats, decor, etc.), you stop, and you take a deep sigh of remembrance back to a simpler time? Yeah...that's it. That's what they are getting from you. And they seem to be doing a pretty good job of it. From Lincoln Logs to Power Rangers & comic book heros...and the ever favorites of Barbie & Easy Bake Oven. There's the resurgence of tinsel trees, real trees, big bulbs & tinsel stars. It's everywhere!

In a land of crazy-busy & the technology infestation, we long for some simpler times. We see pictures & cartoons from the 50's & before in wonder of what that time might really be like [again]. But because of technology, we have things like Pinterest to give us ideas on MAJOR 50'S HOUSEWIFE throwbacks & ruining my reputation.

But that's beside the point. There is a sense of accomplishment that comes with it.
(Oh man...what am I saying? Who is this person pretending to be me??)

However, we are using some of it to our advantage, especially during this crazy holiday season. In all the hustle & bustle, we (the hubby & I) decided we would try to figure out some simpler family times to help get us into the spirit, while creating some memories & hopefully building some traditions!

We started a tradition about 5 years ago of seeing Santa at Bass Pro. Some of you may be scratching your heads at that one...others know exactly what I'm talking about! It has become so popular, you need to get a reservation pass to make sure there's time & to insure you won't wait in line with your kiddos for 3 hours to see some creepy guy & just to pay $30 for 2 tiny pics.

Here's a sneak peak of the kiddos with one of the most amazing Santa's EVER!!!! (Like...I think it was REALLY Santa. Don't roll your eyes at me...I'm serious!)

Teen Boy, Lil Guy (with Meany Chin - will show up in a future post), Santa & Teen Girl at Bass Pro

Just to watch him talking with the kiddos was entrancing. Hubby & I were giddy my his magicality (I don't know if that's even a real word, but I'm using it as such)! And I will tell you that we had quite the creepy obstacle to deal with to get to see this guy. We had to endure the demonic talking taxidermy caribou. Please allow me to share part of that experience with you...

Aren't you glad I shared. Very creepy. If you squint & tilt your head, you might be able to make out that this thing is talking about Facebook. You're welcome for not capturing the creepy, scary laugh. I still shiver. *shivers* Just like that! Nightmares & night terrors could result from this thing.

Another friend (the one who warned me about it) & I decided this must be...
"Damien the Demonic Reindeer, who had developed a taste for blood; and if you come upon him...children, you'd better run!"

Thanks, Bill...collaboration at it's finest!

But we do love this tradition. The set up is amazing! Well...except for the new reindeer addition.

We always work in seeing the lights of Christmas in the Park at Longview Lake. That is coming up very, very soon...YEA!!

A thing we started this year (and hopefully it will continue) is that everyone in the house draws a number; then that's the order we go in to choose a Christmas movie to watch & a [favorite] Christmas treat to enjoy during the movie! So far we've had:

1. "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" with peppermint hot chocolate

2. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" with fudge & egg nog

3. "Elf" with super soft frosted sugar cookies

Because of the numbers in our house right now, we still have 4 more to cover. After that, we plan on catching up on the down week before Christmas. What fun this has been!

We wanted to do Christmas dinner playlists, but time has sadly not leant to that too well. But we will hold out for that one in the future. We also didn't get to have a Christmas open house to show off our trees due to family living dynamics at the moment. So...we really want to do that next year, too.

Another thing my hubby & I do is wrap gifts together. He wraps & I decorate with the ribbons, bows & tags! We are quite the team...

The adorable decorating duo

Just a portion of the decorating duo's creations...thanks to fun with Instagram to show them off
I am also planning on making some Christmas candies & goodies that I remember from my childhood. There was one I especially wanted to find. My grandmother stopped making her goodies about 15 years ago. Ever since I can remember, I would eat these candies that remind me of peanut butter fudge with a chocolate topping. Almost like a Reece's fudge. But I asked & no one seemed to know what I was talking about. But it JUST hit me a few days ago that I must've eaten all of them before anyone else could see them. D'oh! *face palm*

In this time of tradition & nostalgia, I've noticed my style leaning that way, too. The 40's & 50's have been very influential in my style the last few weeks, in a festive sense. (see pic above with hubby)

We are still in the midst of working in all of our church involvement & family get-togethers, too.

It's the most wonderful time of the year...amm-i-rite?

Stay tuned...

God Bless, AM~Erica
